Three of Our Favorite Designers at Lakme Fashion Week

March 13th, 2014 by admin

Lakme Fashion Week is considered a premier fashion event in India. It is funded by Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and takes place in Mumbai twice a year. It first started in 1999, with international models such as Naomi Campbell and Indian film starts such as Deepika Padukone walking the runways. Since then, it’s blossomed into an international attraction, including labels like Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, and Roberto Cavalli. Each year there are two events, one in the spring, the Summer-Resort show, and one in the late summer, the Winter-Festive Show. This year’s Summer-Resort show is planned for March 12-16, and we want to take the opportunity to showcase a few of our favorite designers who will present this year.

Aiman Agha and Armaan Randhawa make up Aarman Aiman, a much-hyped designer duo. They’re known for their approach to bright color and intricate detail, as shown in some of their other designs.  Randhawa and Agha are graduates in fashion and apparel from NIIFT and NIFT, respectively, and started their own line after working for an Indian designer for a year. Their line emphasizes a fusion of embroidery and modern silhouettes, and their show this year is sure to impress.

Manish Malhotra is a popular Indian designer known for presenting exquisite, elaborate designs. His summer collection, appropriately called “A Summer Affair,” will be presented during Lakme Fashion week, and he’s been posting previews of what we can expect on his Facebook and Instagram accounts—lace, metallic accents, exquisite detail, feminine glamor, and more. Malhotra is one of India’s most successful designers, having made clothing for many leading actresses in Bollywood. He’s known for his ability to create and envision what a character’s “look” will be.  In addition to creating clothing for Bollywood stars, Malhotra has created and styled costumes for Hollywood celebrities including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Reese Witherspoon, Demi Moore, Karolina Kurkova, and Kylie Minogue. We can’t wait to see his spring and summer show!

Selvage, named so for “self-edge” redefined, can also be defined as the self-finished edges of fabric that keep a piece from unraveling or fraying.  As a clothing line, it focuses on clean lines, simplicity, and elegance. The goal for the line is creating edgy and experimental, yet wearable clothes.  Known for contemporary design, Selvage strives to create unique yet timeless classics. Selvage is being featured at Lakme Fashion Week as a Generation Next Designer.
